Air Traffic Control
Mission
The mission of vUSAF air traffic control is to provide the vUSAF with voice control by way of VATSIM. These squadrons will utilize the tools of ground and airborne radar to keep air traffic flowing in a safe and orderly manner. They will also provide assistance to distressed aircraft.
Features
Through the VATSIM network, we hope to construct Air Force Base specific and accurate ground radar displays to enable the vUSAF controllers to do their tower job. We also hope to utilize and build sectors accurate to the real-world RAPCONs. By working with VATSIM, not only will it provide vUSAF with a more tailored and realistic experience, but it'll also bring greater attention and future controllers to the VATSIM network, thus helping both the vUSAF and VATSIM to grow.
New recruits will start off as Airmen who will begin initial training for air traffic control at Keesler AFB, MS. That training will include both classroom and on-the-job training with an instructor. Once certified the Airman will be assigned a squadron at a duty station. These squadrons will be assigned based on where the greatest need happens to be.
Along with air traffic controllers, the ATC route will include the 557th Weather Wing out of Offutt AFB, NE. Those taking this route will learn about the weather and how it effects aviation. Our hope is that we can also work with VATSIM to establish a standard 122.2 flight service like entity where pilots (military, commercial and general) can contact the 557th Weather Wing and get verbal briefings on the weather that may affect their aerial mission.
Background
Air traffic services are core to the operation of the national airspace. VATSIM has done an excellent job bringing a most realistic and accurate version to flight simulator. vUSAF hopes to broaden that to include military specific installations and also to provide up-to-date weather verbally to pilots and aircrews. Not only will this be an opportunity to expand both vUSAF and VATSIM, but it'll also provide bring more interest towards promoting real-world aviation.
General Characteristics
Utilize VATSIM where we are able to partner
Promote the continued learning and study of aviation weather
Broadens the entire scope of online flight simulator
